Remembering And Reflecting On The History Of Our Great Nation

By Joyce Peppin
State Representative

This week many families will gather together for their annual Fourth of July celebrations. I hope you and your family will pause to think about the significance of the day as you enjoy the festivities.

Celebrating Independence Day is a tradition that dates back to 1776, when the Declaration of Independence was signed and presented to the public. In 1777 the tradition of watching fireworks was added. Now it often includes watching baseball games, enjoying family barbecues in the backyard, or having picnics at local parks and enjoying the beautiful weather. But there is much more to the holiday than getting together with family and eating good food.

The Fourth of July is a chance for us to remember and reflect upon the foundation of our great nation. It reminds us that the freedoms that we take for granted today did not always exist. The founding fathers put their lives on the line to ensure the citizens of the colonies could enjoy the unalienable rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. The bold undertaking by our founding fathers when they signed the Declaration of Independence undoubtedly put their lives and the lives of others at risk, but they believed the risk was necessary to secure the freedom they desired. They were right.

Their spirit of believing in freedom, justice and liberty for all is still evident today in our troops who are serving in Iraq and throughout the world. We should use this day to pray for our soldiers and their families, and to thank them for their service to our country. Reflecting on the foundation of our Independence Day should cause us to consider the sacrifices made by a few to protect these rights of the many.

As we stop this week to gather with friends and families, let us not forget our friends and families overseas. Let us also remember the sacrifice and common goals of men and women from every generation that have helped build the 13 colonies into the great nation of the United States of America.

I hope you and your family will have a blessed Independence Day and will take advantage of all the opportunities available to you in our great nation.
