PEPPIN RESPONDS TO STATE OF THE STATE Governor’s Plan Moves Minnesota in the Right Direction

SAINT PAUL - Representative Joyce Peppin (R-Rogers) praised Governor Tim Pawlenty’s State of the State Address on Wednesday after he addressed a joint gathering of the House and Senate.

“Our Governor presented a strong, visionary message for Minnesota,” Peppin said. “We are fortunate to live in such a wonderful state, yet at the same time, we want to focus on core issues to build Minnesota’s success well into the future.”

The Governor focused on four areas of improvement: better government, better energy, better education, and better health care.

“I am excited about the Governor’s call to ‘stop paying for good intentions and start paying for better performance’ in state government,” Peppin continued. “We want to make the most of each hard-earned taxpayer dollar, and that means being strategic with our investments and carefully monitoring results. Minnesota citizens should expect no less.”

This theme of rewarding performance carried into the education initiatives proposed. The Governor discussed his “Successful Schools” initiative to provide additional funds for schools that meet or exceed a three-star rating in reading and math, along with his plan to create “3R” high schools, which stand for rigor, relevance, and results. These high schools would also receive additional performance funding for enhancing student opportunities and providing more rigorous courses. “The Governor’s efforts to raise the bar in public education are outstanding,” Peppin said. “It’s not enough to simply fund schools. We need to make sure our children receive the best preparation possible.”

The Governor is expected to deliver his budget to the legislature next week.
