Rogers, MN -- State Representative Joyce Peppin today announced she is seeking one day per month "workdays" in which she would spend up to a full day working side by side in a variety of trades, occupations and professions with her constituents who permit her to join them and work at the same or similar jobs during a typical day at work.
"In order for me to best serve the families in the northwest suburbs, it's important I learn about their jobs, careers, hopes, aspirations and future goals, and experiencing a typical work day with them is one way to do that," Peppin stated.
Peppin adopted the idea after reading about former Florida Governor and U.S. Senator Bob Graham. Graham, a Democrat, began the practice in 1974 while serving in the Florida Senate. He continued workdays during his tenure as Governor and U.S. Senator, and by the time he retired in 2004, had spent over 400 workdays performing service as a police officer, railroad engineer, factory worker, garbage collector, fisherman, teacher, construction worker and busboy, among many others.
"Former Senator Graham's belief in working side-by-side with the people he represented was a great way for him to learn the hopes and challenges faced by his constituents. I would like to have the same type of experience while working with the men and women of the northwest suburbs, Peppin explained.
Peppin is seeking real working situations in which she can perform the actual jobs done by her constituents, without pay, instead of simply accompanying them during their shift. "I grew up on a family farm in central Minnesota plucking chickens, milking cows and baling hay, and I'm hoping to work in different fields over the next year so that I can better learn the wide variety of occupations performed by residents of our area," Peppin said.
