For those currently serving:
As a member of the Veteran’s Affairs Committee of the Minnesota House of Representatives, I'm actively engaged in problem solving for Minnesota National Guard members deployed overseas. Our laws were written when Guard members were typically activated short-term to help with floods, tornadoes, and other emergencies. The new long-term foreign assignments have posed challenges to those serving and their families. Solutions passed into law address a wide range of areas including employment, education benefits, taxes, insurance and the financial challenges caused by the reduced household income. Call my office at 651-296-4219 to request a summary of the provisions passed.
Let me know of issues you encounter. Guard members based out of our Northeast Armory on Broadway Avenue told me their homeowner’s insurance costs can go up dramatically when deployed. I researched the situation and was able to get a law passed that prohibits insurers from changing the risk category due to foreign service.
For Veterans:
Finally a World War II Veteran’s Memorial will be placed on the Capitol grounds! All WWII veterans and their survivors are invited to the groundbreaking on Sunday August 14 at 12:30 p.m. It will be held in the Court of Honor in front of the Veterans Affairs Building. Call me for more details – 651-296-4219. The new memorial will join others honoring veterans. The sculpture and artwork of the Capitol grounds is worth a visit. They provide new opportunities for artists to interpret our history and recognize the individuals who influenced it.
Locally, Ed Karbo continues to lead efforts for an all-wars memorial garden near the Mississippi River. I was able to make veterans gardens eligible for local initiative funds from the MN. Dept. of Natural Resources. While private donations will still be critical, this adds state funds to the resources being identified by the city and Park Board for completion of this project. It will help create a restful and beautiful place to ponder war and peace and the difficult choices and sacrifices made by local residents.
Thanks to the hundreds of people who have shared their stories, ideas and concerns. I’m honored to help problem solve and welcome the input of local residents.
