Dear Editor,
I wanted to share with you a few helpful reminders that can save you money, strengthen democracy, and ensure success for our state in the future:
1. Apply for property tax refunds and the renter’s credit refund. Almost half of those eligible don’t apply. There are refunds for people with property tax increases of over 12% and a different refund for high property taxes in relation to your income.
2. Help for seniors struggling to make ends meet. There’s a senior property tax deferral program that can reduce property tax payments to 3% of income now – the rest will be paid upon sale of the property. It’s a much better way to deal with financial problems than reverse mortgages, lines of credit or credit cards and helps seniors stay in their cherished homes.
3. Check off the campaign finance box on your state income tax form. It doesn’t reduce your refund or increase your tax. It does set aside funds for state campaigns to discourage the power of special interests and big money. Candidates who agree to strict spending limits and to strict limits on funding from lobbyists and PACs are eligible to receive these funds. It’s part of what has kept special interest influence in check in Minnesota politics.
4. Fill out your census form, remind others to do so, and reach out to snowbirds in other states. Minnesota is within 1100 people of losing a congressional seat and a complete count could make the difference. That’s a little more than one person per block in Northeast Minneapolis. Know someone who’s away in Arizona, California or elsewhere this month? Tell them to refuse to fill out any form until they return to their permanent home in Minnesota. Even if they put their Minnesota address on the census form, if they turn it in away from Minnesota it will count for that state, not ours. Billions of dollars of federal funds are distributed based on this count. Make sure Minnesota gets its fair share of federal funding for our schools, our colleges, our roads and other public services.
