As residents prepare to pay their May 15 second half property tax payments, I want you to know I've been actively engaged in work on property tax relief and reform. I've contributed to a House of Representatives tax bill that will benefit almost all homeowners and renters in our area.
If your property taxes are more than 2% of your income, you will be eligible for a streamlined Homestead Credit State Refund. The amount of the refund is related to income and will be a strong help to our seniors on fixed incomes and offer improved assistance to middle income households. Almost all in our area will get some help.
We haven't forgotten renters either. We rejected the governor's proposed $34 million in cuts in the renters credit refund program and acted to stabilize rental property tax growth - a major cause of rent increases.
All properties will benefit from $50 million in local government aid to cities and $20 million to counties. Our local governments struggle to maintain basic services in the face of inflation and federal cutbacks. Slowing the phase out of limited market value will help many property owners as well.
I've worked with the Department of Revenue to increase awareness of our current property tax refund programs. Many homeowners in our area qualify but too many aren't applying for the refunds they're due. There are several provisions, some with income restrictions, and some without. It's not too late to apply. Please call the Minnesota Department of Revenue at (651) 296-3781 for more information or visit www.taxes.state.mn.us
Providing relief to our seniors and families will help us stabilize our neighborhoods and make homeownership more affordable. We've passed many bills to prevent the predatory lending and other schemes that have resulted in too many foreclosures. If you are facing housing finance problems or considering buying a home, please call the Minneapolis information line 311 for referral to informed, reliable help.
During this time of economic uncertainty, I'll continue to try to find ways to help area residents and the local governments that serve us.
