Securing Our Neighborhoods

On a recent cold Saturday morning, many of us learned that positive change is happening in our community- crime is down and there are strong strategies in place to ensure that it will continue to decrease next year. At the State of the 2nd Precinct Meeting (covering northeast and southeast Minneapolis), we learned that our neighborhoods are still the safest parts of the city. From 2006-2007, violent crime dropped 33% and every crime measure showed improvement except burglary. We learned that a crime-fighting plan has been prepared for each specific neighborhood with focus on bringing down the number of burglaries. The number of offenders arrested is up 38%, which reinforces the message that we will not tolerate illegal and harmful behavior in our community.

This won't make the victims of crime feel any better about their bad luck, but it should reduce the number of people who are victimized.

Last year the legislature made significant investments in fighting crime. We provided funding for police overtime and equipment and also provided more help for victims of crime. But money and programs aren't enough - it takes dedicated leadership at the local level and hard work from the many men and women who devote their careers to law enforcement, prosecution, and re-entry supervision. Inspector Robert Skomra and the entire staff of the Second Precinct deserve our highest thanks. Thank you also to the block club leaders, Northeast Crime Patrol volunteers, and all who look out for the neighbors on their block. Securing the safety of our families and homes is a partnership. It was great to see documented results that prove everyone's hard work is making our area safer.
