To the Editor,
I welcome the ideas of area residents, teachers and artists as Minnesota prepares to celebrate a major landmark in its history. I've been appointed to the Sesquicentennial Commission that will plan activities and events to celebrate our state's 150th anniversary in 2008. As part of the effort I envision activities that engage our students in learning from our history (history lessons can offer both fun and wisdom if done right).
I've introduced a bill that proposes commissioning new art that celebrates our state's history. As Art-a-Whirl demonstrates, there are many modern era artists who have talents that are up to a good creative challenge. If you haven't yet visited our Capitol, most of the art about our state's history depicts Minnesota's key role in the Civil War (that monumental event had recently ended when the Capitol was built). I think there's much more to our state's history to be shared and celebrated.
I'm House author of the bonding request to restore our Capitol and expect the rotunda and its leaking dome to be fixed by 2008. Let me know if you'd like to be part of a Capitol tour as I'll be arranging another early this summer for area residents.
Thanks to all the volunteers, leaders and artists who have shaped our local history. I welcome your ideas on how to celebrate the state's history.
Please feel free to contact me at the Capitol at (651) 296-4219, by e-mail at rep.diane.loeffer@house.mn or by mail at 307 State Office Building, St. Paul, MN 55155.
Sincerely,
Diane Loeffler
State Representative
