Rep. Diane Loeffler (DFL-Minneapolis) has been appointed to the Minnesota Sesquicentennial Commission to help plan activities related to Minnesota's 150th anniversary of statehood, which is May 11, 2008.
"Our state has shown leadership in many areas. The Sesquicentennial will be a time to celebrate those past achievements and use them to inspire new initiatives for the future," said Rep. Loeffler. "It's my hope to engage our school children, local communities and Minnesota artists in many parts of the celebration."
Rep. Loeffler was named to the 17-member commission by legislative leadership. The commission will establish a plan for capital improvements, celebratory activities, public engagement, and will seek funding to carry out sesquicentennial activities in each of Minnesota’s 87 counties. The commission consists of 8 legislators and 9 members of the public appointed by the Governor to represent the corporate, non-profit and public sectors.
A member of the Minnesota Capitol Centennial Commission, Rep. Loeffler helped plan and execute the yearlong celebration of the 100th anniversary of the State Capitol in 2005. That effort engaged over 10,000 residents in special activities and earned Rep.Loeffler a Certificate of Recognition from the Governor. An enthusiastic promoter of connecting Minnesotans with their government and its history, Rep. Loeffler often accompanies Northeast Minneapolis residents on tours of the Capitol.
