As American soldiers continue their deployment in Iraq and Afghanistan, Veterans' Day this year takes on even more significance. Veterans' Day serves as an opportunity for all of us to publicly say "thank you" for the sacrifices of active duty military, their families, and the 430,000 living veterans in Minnesota who served in wars past. These veterans continue to show their patriotism through the community service of VFW and American Legion posts in North St. Paul. These men and women deserve the full support of the state and federal governments.
As a member of the Government Operations and Veterans Affairs committee, I worked this session to make Minnesota friendlier to veterans, active duty military personnel and their families, by helping pass the following provisions:
· 100% tuition reimbursement for members of the Minnesota National Guard
· $500,000 for outreach to underserved veterans, including veterans of color, female veterans, and veterans of limited financial means, to assist them in identifying and applying for state and federal benefits for which they're eligible
· $670,000 in state matching funds for a WWII memorial on the Capitol Grounds, to be completed by fall 2006
· New "Support Our Troops" license plates, with proceeds going to military families and veterans' organizations
· $5.4 million for construction and upkeep at state veterans' homes
This Veterans' Day, let's take time to thank all the veterans, service members, and their families for all that they have done for our country.
As always, I welcome you input on this issue. Please feel free to contact me at the Capitol at (651) 296-1188, or by e-mail at rep.leon.lillie@house.mn.
Sincerely,
