Sixty years ago this month, Japanese surrender brought an end to WWII. Celebrations broke out in the streets around Minnesota and the nation when the news was announced. The war's end meant the many thousands of service men and women from Minnesota could finally return home.
Over 300,000 Minnesotans served in WWII, and 79,000 of them are still with us. Yet our understanding of the sacrifices of these members of the "Greatest Generation" is slowly being lost.
Therefore I'm pleased to report that on August 14th state officials broke ground for the long-overdue construction of a WWII Veteran's Memorial on the state Capitol mall. This monument will serve as a constant reminder on the beautiful Capitol grounds of the service the veterans of WWII provided to our country. Bonding money provided by the Legislature this year, along with $500,000 raised by service organizations, will pay for the new memorial.
I look forward to the completion of the memorial in the fall of 2006. It's time we honor the courage of these veterans, and teach younger generations about the war that shaped the 20th Century.
Sincerely,
Leon Lillie
