Minnesota is in the midst of a historic budget deficit that promises to challenge its policy makers and citizens in unprecedented ways as we enter the unchartered territory of a deep economic recession together. Talking with family, friends, and neighbors over the past few months, it’s clear all of our pocketbooks are feeling the pinch as we continue to struggle with a slowing economy marked by increasing unemployment, ever-tightening credit, increasing foreclosures, weak consumer spending, and declines in the stock market.
The good news is we’re living in times where every little bit helps and every idea counts. We are each other’s best resource and I for one am willing and ready to roll up my sleeves and start working toward Minnesota’s economic recovery. I encourage all Minnesotans to join me and participate in helping find solutions to the challenges before us. The Minnesota House of Representatives has created a Budget Solutions Comment Page on its website http://www.house.mn to give Minnesotans an easy and direct way to communicate their ideas with state leaders as we work to eliminate a record-large budget deficit. Your ideas will be forwarded to committee chairs, and many will be considered in committees and added to bills that will be introduced on the House floor.
We’re in a serious economic downturn that offers no easy solutions or quick fixes. While workable solutions will be found on the road to Minnesota’s economic recovery, it will take slow and steady planning to ensure Minnesota’s future prosperity. In the first week of the 2009 Legislative Session we introduced House File 1, a vehicle bill to make the most of the much anticipated federal stimulus package, reviewed Minnesota’s debt management policy and examined factors that impact bond ratings, and looked at how Minnesota’s changing demographic trends will impact revenues and expenditures in the state budget.
Most assuredly, week by week, we will be making important steps that will take Minnesota further along its road to economic recovery. I will keep you updated as the session progresses. Please feel free to call or write me on this issue or any other state or local issue by phone (651) 296-1188, by mail at 369 State Office Building, 100 Martin Luther King Blvd., St. Paul, MN 55155 or via e-mail at rep.leon.lillie@house.mn.
On Saturday, January 24, 2009, please join me with Sen. Charles Wiger and Congresswoman Betty McCollum for a legislative town hall meeting at North St. Paul Community Center – Northwood Room from 10:00-11:00 a.m.
