To the Editor:
This week Minnesotans were met with very troubling news. Like 41 other states, the nationwide economic recession has created a $5.2 billion state budget shortfall that must be resolved by Minnesota lawmakers in the upcoming legislative session. The largest budget deficit in the state’s history will require a swift, responsible resolution that prioritizes spending, and focuses strategically on job growth and economic development.
Minnesotans are now facing unprecedented economic challenges. State Economist Tom Stinson qualified the current recession as the longest and deepest we’ve seen since 1942. The next six to twelve months are projected to be the worst we’ve seen in decades. Seventy-seven thousand Minnesota jobs will be lost in 2009 alone.
Recovering from this economic crisis will be difficult. Now, more than ever, Democrats and Republicans need to work together to resolve the budget deficit, and rebuild our struggling economy. We need to consider these challenges an opportunity to rethink the way government works, and strengthen our economy for the long-term.
But politicians can’t solve all our problems - people in our community need help now. Already 30,000 Minnesotans have lost their jobs in the last twelve months. That’s why I’m calling on people to reach out to neighbors in need of a helping hand. Adopt a family this Holiday Season, or donate to your local food shelf. You can find food shelves in our area at:
2nd Harvest Heartland Emergency Food Shelf

Truly, we all need to work together to get through these difficult times. That’s why I’m asking for your input throughout the legislative session as we balance the budget shortfall and rebuild our economy. You can reach me by phone at (651) 296-1188 or by email at rep.leon.lillie@house.mn. I look forward to hearing from you.
