The Minnesota State Lottery has compiled information about lottery sales in our area, and I wanted to share it with you. They gather this information every year and I find it interesting.
In the past fiscal year, from July of 2005 through June 30, 2006, gross sales for the lottery in District 55A (North Maplewood and North St. Paul) totaled $6,488,667. The majority of these sales -- $3,866,219 -- were generated from various Scratch games, while Online Games accounted for $2,622,448. During this period, 34 businesses in our district served as lottery retailers, earning $392,871 in commissions and incentives.
Lottery sales in our district resulted in contributions of $467,184 to the Environment and Natural Resources Trust Fund and $971,353 to the General Fund. These amounts include unclaimed prize money. The Game and Fish Fund and Natural Resources Fund each received $152,484 while prize redemptions in our district totaled $2,937,501.
One of the Minnesota State Lottery's great benefits is the added funding it provides to protect our environment and wildlife, including money for parks, trails and other recreation areas. In the past year, lottery sales in our area contributed to the Environment and Natural Resources Trust Fund, as well as to the state's General Fund. This funding is in addition to regular appropriations for our environment and natural resources, and it goes directly to parks, trails and other outdoor destinations in Winona and surrounding communities.

And remember if you win big give a little to the local area food shelf or something else local.
