(SAINT PAUL) — Today, the Minnesota House of Representatives failed to pass a $220 million bonding bill to fund the restoration of the Minnesota State Capitol. The bill had bipartisan support and bipartisan opposition.
Rep. Tina Liebling (DFL – Rochester) and Rep. Kim Norton (DFL – Rochester) voted against the bill and released the following statement:
“Minnesota needs a comprehensive bonding bill aimed at supporting state infrastructure putting thousands of Minnesota back to work, and providing significant economic benefits to the state. This bill simply won’t do that.
“We need is a geographically balanced bonding bill. Rochester, Minnesota’s third largest city is glaringly absent as a major recipient of bonding projects. Rochester projects, like the Mayo Civic Center and Zip Rail Line, would create long-lasting jobs and support economic growth and development for our entire region. We shouldn’t pass up this opportunity.
“Nearly all of us agree that the Capitol needs work and needs to be restored, but this isn’t the right way to approach it. When we have a tremendous backlog of worthy bonding projects, it doesn’t make any sense to tie up $220 million in bonding when most of that money will sit unspent for years. The Senate seems to be taking a more comprehensive approach, which we would support.
“We’re nearly out of time and we need a strategy for growing jobs and boosting our economy. It’s time for us to finally get to work on a bipartisan, statewide bonding bill."
