ST. PAUL — State Representative Tina Liebling (DFL – Rochester) released the following statement on the budget agreement reached by Governor Mark Dayton and Republican legislative leaders.
“Like many Minnesotans I am relieved that the government shutdown will soon end and thousands of state employees will return to work.
“The terms of the agreement are troubling. Minnesota has never before borrowed to pay for ongoing operations yet the Republican leadership prefers this — and shortchanging our school children — to raising taxes of any kind, even a taxes on income over $1 million per year. They will tax our children before they will tax the wealthy and shut down government to make it so.
“While I am extremely disappointed in the terms of this agreement I commend Governor Dayton for his vision and leadership. In 16 months every legislator will stand for election and Minnesotans will decide the direction of our state. Since this agreement keeps the state running until then, I commend Governor Dayton for recognizing that a bad solution is better than no solution at all."
