ST. PAUL — Yesterday the Mondale-Carlson Budget Commission released its recommendations. The recommendations include $2.2 billion in permanent cuts, a continuation of the $1.4 billion school shift, an increase in the hospital surcharge, alcohol tax, cigarette tax, and a 4 percent income tax surcharge on all Minnesotans, ending in 2013.
State Representative Tina Liebling (DFL – Rochester) released the following statement on the commission’s recommendations:
“I appreciate the work of the Mondale-Carlson Commission and deeply respect Vice President Mondale, Governor Carlson and the other commission members who have served Minnesotans well throughout their entire careers. I also believe that the more budget-balancing ideas we have, the greater the chance of finding an end to this shutdown.
“There are elements of the recommendations I could support, such as an increase in taxes on alcohol and cigarettes. However, I don’t believe our budget solution should weigh so heavily on those who are least able to pay and have already shouldered the burden of the recession and deep reductions in services. As bad as that solution might be, it is still better than the Republican majority’s all-cuts budget and the continued shutdown of our state government. I am disappointed that the Republican leadership dismissed it out of hand.
“The ideas are out in the public and should be discussed. The key now is for Republicans to work with Governor Dayton on a balanced and fair solution to end the shutdown. Governor Dayton has proposed 7 different compromises to end the shutdown and balance our budget, but Republicans have refused all 7 times. Since the shutdown they have offered nothing. Minnesotans want a balanced approach and a budget that works for all of us, not just the wealthy few."
