HOUSE TAX BILL RAISES STATEWIDE PROPERTY TAXES, CUTS LOCAL CONTROL

(ST. PAUL) – State Representative Tina Liebling (DFL-Rochester) responded to passage of the omnibus House tax bill today.

The GOP tax plan will raise property taxes by $935 million over the next three years on homeowners, small businesses, and other property owners and $378 million on renters over the next four years. Together, this is a $1.3 billion property tax increase over the next four years. “This bill highlights the misplaced priorities of the Republican majority," said Liebling. “I stand with renters and young families and seniors who can’t afford this plan to raise their property taxes.”

“The middle class can not afford to bear the burden of these cuts,” said Liebling. “Repealing the homeowner tax credits means most Minnesota homeowners will pay higher property taxes.”

Rep. Liebling spoke in support of a local sales tax provision. “This is a local control issue,” said Liebling. “The legislators in St. Paul should not be micromanaging us. It is disappointing that every Republican in the House voted against allowing Rochester citizens to make their own decision on projects selected by our own community.”

“The Republican proposal hides taxes that squeeze working Minnesotans,” said Liebling. “My priority is to balance the budget fairly, honestly, and transparently. We must hold the line on property taxes and strengthen the middle class while protecting local control.”
