Assistant Majority Leader Tina Liebling issued the following statement in response to passage of the Transportation Bill in the Minnesota House of Representatives today. The bill, passed on a bipartisan vote of 90 – 43 with enough votes to override the threat of a gubernatorial veto puts more than $1 billion in new revenue to the state's transportation infrastructure over the next four years.
"This bill is long overdue. The lack of new state funding for decades has left our transportation system in disrepair and forced local governments to rely more and more on property taxes. Seniors and others who rarely drive shouldn't be paying for roads through higher property taxes"
"While this bill will not make up for years of neglect, I applaud the members of the conference committee who worked to find a compromise that members of both parties could support. This bill gives us a good start to partially fund Minnesota's growing transportation deficit by asking drivers to pay more of the cost of maintaining roads and bridges and funding transit. Non-metro transit does very well under this bill."
"It's far too simple to call this just a transportation bill. It's also an economic development bill, a public safety bill and a property tax relief bill. It's well past time to get people and goods in Minnesota moving forward - safely, efficiently and quickly, and this bill does that."
