ST. PAUL – The Minnesota House passed a $255 million Capital Investment bill tonight that included initial funding to begin expansion plans for Rochester's Mayo Civic Center on a vote of 84 to 45.
"I'm delighted that funding for the Mayo Civic Center expansion was a part of this important bill," said Liebling, the House sponsor of the bill." The $2.5 million will lay the groundwork for a project with the potential to bring millions of additional dollars in convention and meeting revenue to the Rochester area."
While the main focus of the 2007 legislative session is to craft the state's two-year budget, the legislature takes up a smaller bonding bill in odd years to improve public buildings and infrastructure through state borrowing. Other projects that received House approval in the bill included money for capital improvements for the University of Minnesota and MnSCU schools, upgrades at the Minnesota Zoo and funding for several statewide transit projects.
"I'd like tothank Mayor Ardell Brede and city officials who worked with me to secure support for this project," said Liebling. "This funding is a significant first step in our quest to make Rochester a premier meeting destination."
