REP. LIEBLING PLEASED WITH HOUSE CAPITAL INVESTMENT BILL

ST. PAUL – House Assistant Majority Leader Tina Liebling is excited that funding for the Mayo Civic Center expansion was included in the House Capital Investment bill. The proposal calls for $2.5 million to begin planning for a possible $70 million upgrade to the existing facility.

"I couldn't be more pleased that this important project has cleared its first hurdle," said Liebling, who sponsored the legislation in the House, and worked closely with Mayor Ardell Brady and city officials to move the project forward. "The funding sets the stage for a project that has the potential to bring millions of additional dollars in convention and meeting revenue to the Rochester area."

While the main focus of the 2007 legislative session is to craft the state's two-year budget, the legislature takes up a smaller bonding bill in odd years to improve public buildings and infrastructure through state borrowing. Inclusion in this year's bill sets the stage for a larger bonding request in the 2008 bonding bill.
"If Rochester wants to attract large conventions we need to be able to compete with world class convention facilities," said Liebling. "This is a significant first step in our quest to make Rochester a premier meeting destination in Minnesota."
Rep. Liebling thanked the Mayor and city officials for working closely with her to secure support for the project. The full House is expected to take up the bill later this week, and Liebling expressed optimism for its passage in the House.
