State Representative Tina Liebling (DFL - Rochester) voted "yes" on a bi-partisan vote today to pass $5 million in funding for the University of Minnesota - Rochester expansion in the 2006 House Deficiency and Supplemental Budget bill. The bill passed 103-29.
"This is a great moment for our community," said Liebling. "The House sent a strong bi-partisan message today in support of expanding the U of M in Rochester."
An amendment was proposed to the bill to restore the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities system funding formula, which links funding to the growth of a state college's student body. "I supported this amendment because I want colleges like RCTC to keep up their great program offerings as enrollment grows," said Liebling.
Rep. Liebling expressed her disappointment on the House floor that the bill included only $100,000 in funding for the Mayo-U of M Genomics Partnership, instead of the $18 million requested and previously allocated by the House.
"Investment in the Mayo-U of M genomics partnership is important to the economic future of Minnesota," said Liebling. "It would be foolish of the legislature to pass up this opportunity."
