State Representative Tina Liebling (DFL – Rochester) expressed optimism about the prospects of the bill to fund the first stage of the University of Minnesota expansion in Rochester that is moving through the Legislature. The bill passed the Senate Education Policy Committee unanimously yesterday, and was heard for the first time in the House Higher Education Committee today.
"Momentum for this proposal continues to build," said Liebling. "The development committee is doing a great job making the case for the U of M-Rochester expansion, and I'm very encouraged by the progress we've made so far."
The House Committee voted to hold the bill for possible inclusion in the Omnibus Higher Education bill.
"Some people are concerned that we are asking for an expansion of the U of M-Rochester when recent funding cuts to MnSCU and the University of Minnesota system have not been restored," added Liebling. "Students are shouldering too much debt and parents are wondering if college is still within reach. It is critically important that we both restore higher education funding and launch specialized U of M-Rochester programs. The goal here is not to duplicate or replace existing higher ed in Minnesota. These are strategic new programs tailored to the unique convergence of technology and medicine in our community."
