Rep. Tina Liebling of Rochester responded to the Governor's 2006 State of the State Address by saying there was much in the speech that she agreed with.
"I was happy to hear the Governor recognize the importance of the proposed expansion of the University of Minnesota-Rochester and the Mayo-U of M Genomics Partnership to the strength of the state - projects we worked so hard to pass last year," said Liebling. "I look forward to seeing the Governor follow up with action by fully supporting our plan to fund the first stage of the U of M-Rochester this session and the next stage of the Mayo-U of M Genomics Partnership."
Rep. Liebling stressed that many of the big ideas in the Governor's address are not partisan ideas. "Democrats and Republicans agree that the state cannot stand still, that we need to innovate to compete in a challenging global economy," said Liebling.
"The Governor talked about strengthening education, health care, the environment and jobs to move our state forward," Liebling said. "Myself and many others have long seen these as the key issues to the future of Minnesota. I'm glad to hear the Governor recognize them as such – and I look forward to seeing his words followed up with actions."
Liebling added that if the Governor and the Legislature can focus on these uniting issues, 2006 will be a successful session. "Let's really focus on the areas where we can find common ground, like early childhood education and expanding health coverage for the uninsured, rather than being distracted by the wedge issues the Governor raised in his speech that only serve to divide us."
