State Representative Tina Liebling, of Rochester, today voted against a partisan attempt to make flag-burning an issue at the State Capitol, saying the Legislature has enough on its plate dealing with a chronic budget deficit, funding shortages for schools and a growing health care crisis.
"This is an issue for Congress," Liebling said. "The only reason Republicans are bringing it up in the House is to turn it into partisan football. I was elected in a large part because the voters in Rochester are tired of the political games being played in St. Paul. They want their elected officials to concentrate on pressing issues like education, health care and jobs.
"Today we learned that most of the bonding projects for Rochester were included in the House bonding bill. For this legislative session to stay on track, it is an absolute must that we focus on the core issues of passing this bonding bill and balancing our budget - not the sideline issues that end up driving the legislature to gridlock and party politics."
The resolution was brought up in the House Governmental Operations Committee today.
