Governor's Transportation Proposal Acknowledges Funding Needs

Rep. Tina Liebling of Rochester was pleased that Governor Pawlenty's recently announced transportation proposal acknowledged urgent funding needs.

"I'm glad to see the Governor acknowledge our transportation needs," Liebling said. " Everyone agrees that we have to address maintenance and congestion on our roads. I am particularly encouraged that the Highway 52 interchanges at Hadar and Cannon Falls that many Rochester residents use are included in MnDOT's priorities."

Liebling also expressed concern over the Governor's strategy of paying for transportation projects by borrowing $2.5 billion over the next 10 years. "We've been putting transportation on the credit card for the last three years, and we're over the limit," said Liebling. "The Governor's plan would not be paid off until 2038.
It is not wise or fair to pass the bills on to our children and grandchildren."

"We passed a bi-partisan transportation bill last session that took an honest, pay-as-you go approach, but the governor vetoed that bill. I believe that paying for what we use is the fiscally responsible way to fund transportation."

Liebling added, "The Governor's plan does not address funding for city, county and township roads, areas where there are also growing needs."
