University of Minnesota-Rochester Will Be an Asset for the Whole State
Rep. Tina Liebling of Rochester announced her enthusiastic support for the conclusions reached by the Rochester Higher Education Committee on expanding the University of Minnesota-Rochester in its report released to the Governor today. The committee endorsed a specialized research university focused on taking advantage of Rochester's unique resources in health sciences, biosciences, engineering, and technology.
"This proposal presents an exciting opportunity to the entire state of Minnesota to prepare for the economy of the future," said Liebling. "Rochester is already an economic driver for the state in the health science and technology sectors. This plan leverages those strengths."
"Last session, Rochester's legislative delegation worked together to obtain the initial funding for the committee," Liebling explained. "Most legislators understood the need. This session I will be working to show my legislative colleagues how U of M-Rochester will complement existing higher education in Minnesota. I congratulate the committee for presenting us with such a thoughtfully constructed proposal."
As a member of the House Subcommittee on Technology, Bioscience and Medical Products, Rep. Liebling has been a key supporter of the Mayo-University of Minnesota genomics partnership and construction of the new University Center Rochester health sciences building.
Liebling said that she will work enthusiastically to obtain funding to put the University plan into action. "When you have a good product, it is easier to sell, " said Liebling.
