Representative Tina Liebling Optimistic On Bonding Bill Rochester Projects

ST. PAUL, MN – Representative Tina Liebling (DFL-Rochester) reacted with satisfaction about the Rochester projects recommended today in the capital investment bill approved by the House Ways and Means Committee.
"I'm really happy to see this bill moving, especially when we think back to what didn't happen last year," said Liebling. "We didn't get all of what we asked for, but it's a good start, it's a significant and meaningful bonding bill, and I have hope that funds will be added as it moves through the House and conference committee with the Senate," she said.
Several important Rochester projects are in the bill, including $20 million for the joint Mayo Clinic/University of Minnesota genomics research building, and almost $11 million for the "Rockenbach" project, a remodel of an empty gym at Rochester Community and Technical College into space for nursing and related health science programs. Liebling is the chief author of the amendment supporting the Rockenbach project.
The bonding bill now goes to the House floor for debate and action. A final vote may be taken before the end of the month.
"Wisconsin, California and other states are initiating major programs to fund genomics research. It's important that Minnesota is recognizing that we have to invest in keeping our talented researchers here," Liebling said. "We need them here, where their work can help create good paying biotechnology jobs in our community and for our citizens."
Other Rochester area projects are slated to receive a combined $7.627 million.
