ST. PAUL, MN State Rep. Denise Dittrich (DFL Champlin) and state Rep. Melissa Hortman (DFL Brooklyn Park) are inviting area residents, teachers, and local school leaders to participate in an important discussion regarding school funding.
Reps. Dittrich and Hortman are working to shine light on School Trust Lands in Minnesota lands responsible for delivering tens of millions of dollars of funding to the states public schools every year. By informing the public about this little-known resource, these local legislators hope to enhance public scrutiny of how the lands are managed, in order to more effectively maximize the benefit of the lands for Minnesota students.
New attention brought to School Trust Lands has delivered results for local school districts. Because of legislation passed in 2008 that will enhance oversight of the Permanent School Trust Fund, this year Minnesota school districts will receive an additional $28 in ongoing school funding for every student in Minnesota.
Still, Reps. Dittrich and Hortman assert more can, and must, be done to fully utilize School Trust Land resources. But they say that work cannot be done without the knowledge and support of Minnesotans.
