NEWS RELEASE

HAMILTON ANNOUNCES NEW TECHNOLOGY FUNDING FOR LOCAL SCHOOLS

ST. PAUL – A class action lawsuit settlement between the State of Minnesota and Microsoft will lead to improved technology in area schools, according to State Representative Rod Hamilton (R-Mountain Lake).

“In all, state school districts will receive $55.2 million in vouchers to buy new computer hardware and software,” Hamilton said. “And more than $585,000 of it will be coming to schools in my legislative district.”

The money is part of a $182 million settlement which alleged that Microsoft overcharged Minnesota consumers and businesses for certain products. Hamilton said any consumer or business in Minnesota that bought certain products from Microsoft was eligible to receive vouchers to purchase new hardware or software. But once the deadline for the public closed, half the value of the unclaimed vouchers was made available to the Minnesota Department of Education.

The voucher amount available to each district or charter school is based upon its percentage of the state’s total free and reduced price lunch eligible students. Here is the voucher breakdown for schools in Rep. Hamilton’s district:
Worthington: $240,677.36
Mountain Lake: $48,450.97
Windom: $60,169.34
Heron Lake-Okabena-Lakefield: $27,943.81
Round Lake: $11,718.37
Red Rock Central: $55,436.92
Jackson County Central: $83,380.73
Westbrook-Walnut Grove: $57,239.75

“Lawsuits can be ugly; but this settlement will turn out to be positive for our schools and students,” Hamilton said. “Our students will be better prepared for the future because they were able to utilize the most up-to-date computer hardware and software thanks to the availability of the technology vouchers.”
