NEWS RELEASE

HAMILTON HELPS APPROVE TAXES LEGISLATION

ST. PAUL – State Representative Rod Hamilton (R-Mountain Lake) said he was pleased to join the majority in the Minnesota House recently in approving the Omnibus Tax bill. Hamilton said working families in our district will benefit from the legislation.

“This bill actually provides tax relief to many of my constituents,” Hamilton said. “The differences between the House and Senate tax bills are like night and day, as the Senate is proposing nearly $1.4 billion in tax increases – which will ultimately kill jobs.”

Under the tax bill, a half million married filers would benefit by conforming Minnesota’s laws to the federal joint standard deduction – a $56 million benefit. Also, fewer middle-income taxpayers will be affected by the costly Alternative Minimum Tax (AMT). And families will be able to claim tax savings for the investments they make in long-term care insurance, life insurance and Health Savings Accounts (HSAs).

The bill also increases local government aid for rural communities; repeals a cap on the K-12 education credit, allowing many low-and middle-income families to invest more in their children’s education; helps senior citizens keep a little more of their money by exempting all medicine from the sales tax; and broadens the senior deferred property tax program, which provides added relief for seniors facing rising property taxes.

“This was an easy bill to support,” Hamilton said. “The middle class, our senior citizens, our military personnel, our married couples, and our small business owners will all receive a tax break. Most of our communities will see increased local government aid payments. What’s not to like?”

“As my session survey proved, residents around here are strongly opposed to tax increases,” Hamilton said. “This legislation protects family budgets from the proposed Senate DFL tax hikes.”
