NEWS RELEASE

ETHANOL BILL APPROVED IN HOUSE

ST. PAUL – On a vote of 91 to 43, the Minnesota House of Representatives approved legislation that calls for ethanol to make up 20 percent of the total volume of gasoline consumed in Minnesota by 2013. State Representative Rod Hamilton (R-Mountain Lake) co-authored the bill and voted for its approval.

“As I’ve said throughout this process, this bill brings welcome news for our corn growers and it will help improve economic development in rural Minnesota,” Hamilton said. “Corn is our state’s largest crop, and finding new ways to further utilize this product will help increase profitability for our farmers and our rural communities.”

As part of Hamilton’s bill, if the increased use of E85 fuel and the continued blending of ten percent ethanol in all gasoline does not reach the 20 percent goal by 2013, the bill mandates that ethanol concentration in all gasoline be increased to 20 percent. The legislation also provides for the promotion of the use of renewable liquid fuels in the state, which is vital according to Rep. Hamilton.

“Ethanol is better for our environment and reduces our reliance on foreign oil,” Hamilton said. “This vote sends the message that Minnesota believes in its homegrown products and strongly supports renewable fuels.”

The Minnesota Senate has approved similar legislation, and Governor Pawlenty is expected to sign the bill when it reaches his desk.
