NEWS RELEASE

REP. HAMILTON ASKS GOVERNOR TO RETAIN FUNDING FOR LONG TERM CARE FACILITIES

ST. PAUL – On March 29, State Representative Rod Hamilton (R-Mountain Lake) sent a letter to Governor Tim Pawlenty urging him to avoid cuts to group homes, day programs, and nursing homes as a way to balance the state’s remaining budget deficit.

“As I told the Governor, Minnesota Republicans have always believed that we must ensure the stability of core government services,” Hamilton said. “Chief among the core areas of government is the safety and quality of life for Minnesotans with disabilities, our elders and the providers who care for them.

Hamilton’s letter was co-signed by nearly all Minnesota House Republicans.

Hamilton believes February forecast projections provide an opportunity to buy-back past cuts to these providers. Governor Pawlenty’s budget plan, which was based on the November forecast’s deficit $1.2 billion deficit, included a 2.5% cut – $37 .3 million – to home and community-based services for the disabled and elderly and nursing homes.

Now that the February forecast shows the projected deficit down by $209 million to $994 million, Hamilton believes that some of that $209 million should be used to buy back the $37.3 million cut to these services.

“With the recent economic news, I am hopeful the Governor will join us in working to buy back the rate reduction to the frail elderly and people with disabilities,” Hamilton said.
