ST. PAUL – State Representative Rod Hamilton (R-Mountain Lake) is co-authoring legislation that will help pregnant women in need. The Positive Alternatives Act would provide state support for services offered to women facing an unwanted pregnancy.
“Many women who choose to have an abortion do so because the child is unwanted or because they don’t feel financially secure,” Hamilton said. “These explanations, as well as some of the others, can be addressed by assuring that the necessary services are accessible to pregnant women.”
Positive Alternatives would provide practical help to women in need by making state grants available to life-affirming organizations such as pregnancy care centers, adoption agencies and maternity homes. These organizations help more than 50,000 women each year; additional funds would enable them to provide needed services to many more women.
Hamilton’s bill would make $4 million in state grants available each biennium to life-affirming organizations, and another $1 million would fund a public information campaign to inform citizens about fetal development, abortion alternatives, and how to receive help with an unexpected pregnancy.
“Its important for women facing an unexpected pregnancy to understand that there are other options available besides abortion,” Hamilton said. “This bill will allow organizations to reach out to these women and give them the support they need.”
