REP. HAMILTON OPPOSES TAXES PROPOSAL THAT WOULD ELIMINATE JOBZ PROGRAM

ST. PAUL - State Representative Rod Hamilton (R-Mountain Lake) said he was disappointed to learn that legislative leaders in the House are targeting rural Minnesota in order to eliminate the state’s $1 billion budget deficit.

“It appears some legislators are trying to stick it to rural Minnesota again,” Hamilton said. “They want to eliminate various tax credit programs designed to encourage innovation, research and development and job growth. Some of these tax credits are especially detrimental to emerging industries like bioscience and to jobs and the economy in rural Minnesota.”

The comprehensive taxes proposal calls for the elimination of the Job Opportunity Building Zones (JOBZ) program that has helped revitalize the rural Minnesota job climate by enticing companies to expand and relocate to Greater Minnesota.

Specifically, tax breaks would be removed from research and development and biosciences companies, as well as those corporations that conduct business outside of the United States.

Hamilton said that could be especially harmful to many agribusinesses, so ultimately area farmers will feel the impact.

“Targeting the area of rural Minnesota job creation in order to balance the budget doesn’t make a lot of sense,” Hamilton said. “We’ve had 11 businesses either expand or relocate to District 22B since the JOBZ plan was implemented. Under this program, Worthington has positioned itself as a state leader in the biosciences. It’s pretty sad that they’re targeting a program that is making a difference in rural Minnesota, and putting people to work, in order to make up for the overspending.”
