ST. PAUL - State Representative Rod Hamilton (R-Mountain Lake) continued his fight for equitable nursing home funding during a recent debate on the Minnesota House Omnibus Health and Human Services (HHS) finance bill.
Hamilton attempted to amend his bill that increases reimbursement rates to facilities currently receiving the lowest payment amounts onto the comprehensive HHS plan, but it was basically defeated on a party-line vote.
"Its disappointing because this action would have brought up to an additional six percent increase to the reimbursement rate and brought immediate help to rural Minnesota's long-term care facilities," Hamilton said. "I'm disappointed more DFL'ers didn't see the advantage of changing this obviously flawed reimbursement rate system."
Hamilton noted that he had successfully amended this provision onto the bill when it was passed out of a House health committee, but it was removed during another committee hearing before it reached the House floor.
Hamilton said he was also disappointed that the HHS finance bill included funding for organizations that provide abortions.
"Our tax dollars should not be used to fund abortions," Hamilton said. "This HHS bill actually reduces funding for programs that provide abortion alternatives for mothers who are facing an unwanted pregnancy. It also significantly increases funding for welfare programs."
"Overall, I felt the HHS bill had a poor set of priorities and that's why I did not support it," Hamilton concluded.
