HAMILTON SUPPORTS HOUSE K-12 FINANCE BILL

ST. PAUL – By a vote of 119-13, the Minnesota House has approved its omnibus K-12 Education Finance bill, which will fund state education needs over the next two years. State Representative Rod Hamilton (R-Mountain Lake) voted in favor of the proposal.

“This bill contains nearly $14 billion for education priorities, which is an increase of 7.2 percent over the last biennium,” Hamilton said.

Hamilton said the bill increases the basic K-12 formula by 3% and 3% in fiscal years 2008 and 2009, and restores funding for ECFE, Head Start and School Readiness programs to appropriation levels prior to the 2003 adjustments.

The bill also contains two local provisions that were chief authored by Rep. Hamilton. The first allows Jackson County Central to transfer up to $400,000 from its operating capital account to its general fund so it can use those revenues as needed. The second bill gives the Windom School District the same authority, allowing it to transfer $50,000.

Hamilton said the House and Senate will now work out the differences in their K-12 proposals in a joint conference committee, and create a compromise plan that can be approved by both legislative bodies.

“The Senate’s version of the bill is more heavily weighted towards projects in Minneapolis and St. Paul, so hopefully we can create more of a rural balance in the conference committee debate.”

Once the compromise K-12 legislation is passed, it will be sent to Governor Pawlenty for his signature.
