REP. HAMILTON VOTES IN FAVOR OF HOUSE AGRICULTURE AND VETERANS FUNDING PLAN

ST. PAUL - State Representative Rod Hamilton (R-Mountain Lake) joined the majority in the Minnesota House Tuesday in approving an omnibus funding bill for agriculture and veterans priorities. The bill was approved by a vote of 131 to 2.

“This bill shows that Minnesota cares about its military and veterans, and is willing to make needed investments for rural Minnesota,” Hamilton said.

Specifically, the $134 million omnibus finance bill contains more than $30 million for ethanol producer payments; $8 million for the Agricultural Utilization Research Institute (AURI); and $28 million for the Department of Veterans Affairs. It also expands loan eligibility for the Rural Finance Authority, and dedicates funding for pest management, bio-energy and the surveillance and eradication of Bovine Tuberculosis.

Hamilton, who is the Republican lead on the House Agriculture, Rural Economies, and Veterans Affairs Committee, helped craft the legislation and said the final product was created on a bipartisan basis.

“I’m happy to report that this bill was truly non-partisan,” Hamilton said. “The Republicans and Democrats who worked on this bill put the interests of rural Minnesota and our veterans ahead of party interests, and that’s why this legislation was approved overwhelmingly.”

Hamilton said a joint House/Senate conference committee will now craft a final proposal that can be passed by both bodies. Once that happens, the compromise bill will be sent to Governor Pawlenty for his signature.
