ST. PAUL – Helping farmers improve their economic viability is the main goal of an agriculture proposal being touted by State Representative Rod Hamilton (R-Mountain Lake) and other Republicans in the Minnesota House. Hamilton, who is the Republican Lead on the House Agricultural, Rural Economies and Veterans Affairs Committee, recently held a press conference in St. Paul to explain the importance of improving our ag economy.
“We’ve made good progress in the last few years, and we’re going to continue listening to crop farmers and livestock producers as we move forward,” Hamilton said. “Now is the time to show our continued commitment to farmers by approving more of these common-sense initiatives.”
Hamilton highlighted several aspects of the comprehensive proposal. The first promotes energy for the next generation. Realizing that there is a corn price issue at play for farmers, and understanding that corn alone will not be able to fulfill all ethanol needs as the use of the renewable fuel continues to expand, the plan would expand energy research and focus on cellulosic-based ethanol to help meet Minnesota’s future demands.
To keep the dairy industry competitive, Hamilton said it’s important to enact the Dairy Investment Credit. This would allow dairy producers up to $50,000 in income tax credits for improvements they make to their dairy operations.
In addition, the proposal would provide property tax relief on agricultural land, and increase the number of E85 pumps in Minnesota to 1,800.
“Agriculture is a $7.5 billion per year business in Minnesota,” Hamilton said. “Our goal is to improve the markets for our ag products while assisting our farmers and producers in making their operations more profitable.”
