ST. PAUL – On Feb. 8, the Minnesota House Agriculture Policy Committee approved a bill co-authored by State Representative Rod Hamilton (R-Mountain Lake) that increases the minimum content of ethanol in Minnesota gasoline.
“I am pleased that committee members recognized the importance of this bill,” said State Representative Greg Davids (R-Preston), Chair of the House Agriculture Policy Committee. “Ethanol is good for the environment and good for our farmers.”
“This legislation is welcome news for our corn growers and it will help improve economic development in rural Minnesota,” Hamilton said.
According to Hamilton’s bill, all gasoline sold in Minnesota must contain at least 20 percent ethanol by January 1, 2010, or 60 days after half of the new model automobiles being sold in Minnesota carry warranties for the new fuel.
“This is just another way we can reduce our reliance on foreign oil,” Hamilton said. “Ethanol should play a large role in the future of American energy, and this bill can only help Minnesota’s position as an ethanol leader.”
The ethanol bill is expected to receive further committee debate before reaching the House floor.
