REP. HAMILTON SAYS JOBZ INITIATIVE MAKING A DIFFERENCE IN SOUTHWESTERN MINNESOTA

ST. PAUL – State Representative Rod Hamilton (R-Mountain Lake) said he is encouraged by a recent study that found Job Opportunity Building Zones (JOBZ) to be making a positive impact in Greater Minnesota.

Since JOBZ became law in 2003, we have seen nearly 700 new jobs created in southwestern Minnesota, and nearly $2 million in tax benefits in our area,” Hamilton said.

The JOBZ initiative offers tax-free development opportunities to companies that start up or expand in certain rural areas of the state. Since being signed into law, 209 deals were completed at the end of 2005. According to a report written by the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development, these businesses have created more than 3,100 jobs and make $276 million in capital investments. Overall, JOBZ-related activity will generate $180 million in personal income to the state.

“We’ve had 11 deals completed in Jackson, Watonwan and Cottonwood counties, and 3 more near Worthington,” Hamilton said. “There is no question that without Minnesota’s JOBZ benefits, many if not all of these companies would be operating in Iowa or South Dakota.”

Hamilton added that of the jobs created through the program, more than 68% of them pay $11 per hour or more, and nearly 38% pay $15 and higher.
