ST. PAUL - Governor Pawlenty recently took the first step towards eliminating a $700 million deficit recently by announcing his budget plan.
“Personally, I agree with the Governor on several points, but there are also a few reduction proposals that I believe we should avoid,” Hamilton said. “Rarely does a governor get his budget proposal passed lock, stock, and barrel. This plan will be no different.”
Besides eliminating the $700 million deficit, the Governor’s proposal would boost local K-12 classroom funding, increases transportation funding, and slows soaring health care costs. It also calls for a casino deal with Indian tribes that would produce $200 million for the state during the next two years.
“The thing to keep in mind is that the Governor’s proposal is just that,” Hamilton said. In essence, he has provided us with a road map, now it is up to the Legislature take this budget deficit to its final destination.”
My top priority during this deficit reduction process will be to protect rural Minnesota families,” Hamilton continued. “Now I need to find out what your priorities are. The House will begin holding committee hearings immediately to discuss whether we should approve some, most, or all of the Governor’s recommendations, so please contact me with your concerns.”
