ST. PAUL – The Minnesota House of Representatives has approved legislation that would bring a football stadium back to the University of Minnesota’s campus. State Representative Rod Hamilton (R-Mountain Lake) voted in favor of the measure.
“In simple terms, the State of Minnesota and the University of Minnesota have made a trade,” Hamilton said. “Under this bill, the state would help the University build a football stadium, and in return the University would give the State nearly 3,000 acres of environmentally-sensitive land.”
The "land-for-stadium'' legislation allows the state to buy the University-owned land in Dakota County and permanently preserve it for recreational purposes. It will cost $9.4 million per year for the next 25 years. The University of Minnesota would then use this money to help pay long-term debt on its new football facility.
“This land swap basically allowed the state to receive something for its contribution,” Hamilton said. “The football team can now return to the campus where it belongs and the state will be able to permanently preserve a critical environmental area.”
Hamilton expects the Minnesota Senate to debate the bill in the next few weeks.
