HAMILTON: LEGISLATURE ADDRESSING ENVIRONMENT ISSUES

ST. PAUL – State Representative Rod Hamilton (R-Mountain Lake) said that while the highlight of the 2006 Legislative Session will be the Capital Investment bill, several environmental issues could also grab headlines during the coming weeks.

“Even though this is supposed to be a short session, the Environment Committee has been debating many important pieces of legislation so far this session,” Hamilton said.

Hamilton noted that the Capital Investment bill could also contain some environmental provisions. He’s hoping that the proposal will contain a provision that secures $2 million for ecological services, which would help with fishery improvements at the dam area in Jackson.

As for specific environmental legislation, Hamilton expects significant debate on the Clean Water Legacy Act, which would generate funds to protect, restore and preserve the quality of Minnesota’s surface waters. Another bill gaining momentum would set aide 1/8th of 1 percent of our current state sales tax revenues and specifically fund only hunting & fishing conservation and habitat programs.

“We have some good bills coming forward that will protect our environment, and I look forward to hearing more about them throughout the committee process and during potential debates on the House floor,” Hamilton said.

If you’d like to give your opinions about environmental issues, or any other legislative topic, you are encouraged to contact Rep. Hamilton at any time. He can be reached by email at rep.rod.hamilton@house.mn, by phone at 1-800-735-2463, or by mail at 423 State Office Bldg., St. Paul, MN 55155.
