NEWS RELEASE

HAMILTON: STATE ECONOMIC FORECAST LOOKS BRIGHT

ST. PAUL – The 2005 Legislative session has begun, and State Representative Rod Hamilton (R-Mountain Lake) said he is ready to get back to work.

“The highlight of this session should be the bonding bill, which will be filled with capital improvement projects across the state,” Hamilton said. “As for local projects in the bill, I will strongly support the completion of Highway 60 and funding for the Veterans Home in Luverne. In addition, the Legislature will be debating a wide variety of policy issues, ranging from eminent domain to illegal immigration.”

One item the Legislature will not have to debate is how to solve a budget deficit. State economists recently projected Minnesota to have a budget surplus of $181 million for the 2006-2007 budget cycle. Hamilton noted that $93 million of this must be used to complete a school shift buyback, meaning $88 million of the budget surplus remains.

“Revenues increased by $124 million and spending decreased by $57 million, creating this welcome financial news,” Hamilton said.

“As always, I welcome comments from area residents on state spending and any other legislative issue,” Hamilton continued. “Our goal is to finish early this year, so I encourage people to contact me with their concerns over the next few weeks.”

Rep. Hamilton can be reached by email at rep.rod.hamilton@house.mn, by phone at 1-800-735-2463, or by mail at 423 State Office Bldg., St. Paul, MN 55155.
