NEWS RELEASE

GAROFALO PROPOSES THE “GET YOUR JOB DONE ACT OF 2010”

Bill would slash pay for the Legislature and Governor if no budget agreement is reached

ST PAUL – The first bill that State Representative Pat Garofalo [R-Farmington] promises to introduce during the 2010 legislative session will cut the pay of state legislators and the Governor if they repeat not reaching a budget agreement as they did in 2009. If passed, the bill would cut executive and legislative branch salaries by 50% until a budget bill was agreed upon.

“When public and private sector workers don’t get their jobs done there are financial penalties,” said Rep. Garofalo. “The same principle should apply to the Legislature and the Governor: no work, no pay.

“Every two years we come into office with one job: produce a balanced budget for the state of Minnesota. Though I support the decisive action that Governor Pawlenty took last month, I am worried that it sets a dangerous precedent for relations between the executive and legislative branches.

“This legislation will help insure that future legislatures don't repeal the failures of the 2009 session. I am confident that if the public contacts their legislators, this legislation will have a good chance of becoming law. I look forward to hearing some elected officials explain why accountability from politicians is a bad idea.”
