PRESS RELEASE

GAROFALO APPOINTED TO K-12 EDUCATION CONFERENCE COMMITTEE: Will work to make sure education reforms remain in final bill

ST PAUL – State Representative Pat Garofalo [R-Farmington] has been appointed by the Speaker of the House to serve as the only House Republican on the K-12 Education Omnibus Finance bill conference committee. The committee, made up of five Representatives and five Senators, will attempt to reconcile the differences between the House and Senate versions of the K-12 funding bill.
"I am honored to serve on the K-12 education conference committee, but I fully realize that the work that lies ahead of us will be very challenging", said Rep. Garofalo. "The education finance bill though not popular with House Republicans contains a number of policy reforms that I think will benefit students in this state. And my personal opinion is that I want a hand in trying to make this bill better. I want to be able to go back to my constituents and say that I tried to represent our community as best I could."
The first meeting of the conference committee will take place this week and will most likely involve a walk-through of each proposal and how they are similar or different. Once the comparison is completed, House and Senate members and staffers will begin the negotiation process that will lead to the production of a conference committee report and a new bill. Any bill that emerges from the conference committee negotiations will go back to the House and Senate for final legislative approval and then to the Governor's desk for his signature or veto.
"Minnesotans take education very seriously", said Garofalo. "It is our largest budget expenditure and I don't think I've ever run across a voter that hasn't cared in some way about our state's commitment to educating our children. Helping write the legislation that will guide Minnesota’s education system for the next two years will be the most important work I do at the Legislature this session."
