~Replaces Former Speaker Sviggum~
ST. PAUL – State Representative Pat Garofalo, R-Farmington, will work with new-found influence next session after being named to serve as the Lead Republican on the powerful Finance Committee of the Minnesota House of Representatives.
The appointment puts Garofalo in line as the potential Finance Committee chairman if Republicans regain the House majority in 2008. Every spending bill must come through the Finance Committee for approval, something Garofalo said makes the committee one of the most important of the 37 different House committees.
“This is a unique opportunity to shape policy for our region and the entire state,” Garofalo said. “I respect the responsibility that comes with this position and I’m committed to doing the job well.”
Garofalo succeeds former Speaker Steve Sviggum in the position. Sviggum resigned from the House to become the Commissioner of Labor and Industry in the Cabinet of Governor Tim Pawleny on July 17.
"Representative Garofalo has earned himself bipartisan respect among his colleagues and I have complete confidence that he will continue rising through the ranks because of it," said House Republican Leader Marty Seifert, R-Marshall. "He will do an excellent job advocating for responsible spending on behalf of the taxpayers."
The next regular legislative session will begin on February 12, 2008. Garofalo is in his second term representing southern Dakota and northwest Goodhue counties.
