GAROFALO BLASTS APPLE VALLEY PARK-AND-RIDE DECISION.

ST. PAUL – Representative Pat Garofalo, R-Farmington, today blasted a decision by the Apple Valley City Council to block area residents from using the Apple Valley park-and-ride lot.

“The council’s decision is outrageous. Riders from Lakeville and Farmington pay to use the service, they deserve equal access. With gas prices remaining high and more people than ever turning to transit, we should be bending over backwards to accommodate commuters’ desire for an alternative. It is unfortunate that the Apple Valley council has become territorial and turned against the people making the bus routes such a success,” Garofalo said.

In its June 14 meeting, the Apple Valley City Council took the first step to installing a permit parking system at the popular Apple Valley park-and-ride. The catch, Garofalo said, is that the system would only be available to Lakeville and Farmington residents if they are willing to accept a property tax increase. A property tax increase which Garofalo and other community leaders oppose. At this time, there would be no impact on on-street parking, but Garofalo warned that could quickly change.

“First they’ll block us out of the parking lot, then they’ll block us from the street,” Garofalo said.

"When gas is $3 a gallon, restricting access to transit facilities is stupid. And you can quote me on that."
