ST. PAUL - It was perhaps appropriate that the Minnesota House took up the amendment at the end of a marathon 17-hour floor session that had legislators casting votes until 5:30 a.m. last Wednesday morning.
With the support of Republicans and a handful of moderate Democrats, House members adopted an amendment that would make careless driving resulting in a person’s death a gross misdemeanor. In current law, careless driving which results in death is considered misdemeanor careless driving, the same offense a person might be charged with for running over a road sign.
State Representative Pat Garofalo, R-Farmington, was thankful for the support of his fellow legislators.
"I can't say enough how much I appreciate the support of those Democrats who broke ranks with their leadership and voted to adopt the amendment", Garofalo said. "At the end of a very long, very stressful day, they did the right thing and I am truly grateful."
Garofalo went on to say "This shows that working with the other side of the aisle does pay dividends. Sometimes we only focus on the conflict at the legislature. However, behind the scenes there are many of us working to put policy ahead of politics."
The amendment is about the sanctity of life, Garofalo said.
